UNSEEN CITY

2025 SENIOR THESIS

This is an interpretive archive that captures the unique and often overlooked details present within our everyday environment.

Through observation and a series of exploratory walks across New York City and London, I have assembled a body of imagery that both documents and recontextualizes the things that I have found. In doing so, I aim to encourage viewers to reflect on the familiar spaces they move through daily, and to uncover the hidden layers that shape their environment.

System

Because I was working with so many different types of imagery, I wanted to create a strong visual system and cohesive feel for the book. The first step was establishing a clear color palette: red, yellow, blue, green, white, and black. I limited myself to these six colors throughout the project. To introduce variation within my restricted palette, I used some colors as flat fills, while others were paired with black outlines to create contrast and emphasis.

Image Treatment

Everything in my book is rooted in imagery, so I developed a consistent system for working with the images. The first step in this process was converting all raw images to black and white. I made this choice to create a visual separation between the original images and the book’s color palette. By doing so, my interpretations, applied through color and design, would stand out and not get lost within the original photographic content.

Imagery

In terms of image treatment, I would either draw directly on the image or use the image as a starting point to generate new visuals.

Writing

The writing is simple and something I would like to develop further and improve upon. It offers both reflection and insights at to why I made certain decisions.
