UNSEEN CITY

2025 SENIOR THESIS

This is an interpretive archive that captures the unique and often overlooked details present within our everyday environment.

Through observation and a series of exploratory walks across New York City and London, I have assembled a body of imagery that both documents and recontextualizes the things that I have found. In doing so, I aim to encourage viewers to reflect on the familiar spaces they move through daily, and to uncover the hidden layers that shape their environment.

Environmental Font

This is a typeface I created using elements from my environment. Every part of each letter is sourced from found shapes in the urban landscape. I began by compiling a gallery of these shapes and then used the Avant Garde typeface as a structural template to guide the construction of my own letters in Adobe Illustrator. The final typeface includes 52 characters, one primary and one alternate version for each letter.

To contrast the structured typeface I created, I also wanted to include a more organic version of lettering found in cities. I decided to design a second typeface using graffiti letters sourced from New York City and London.
